Building connections and empathy

Monday:

We started off our day with a design thinking workshop focused around empathy. After breaking up into groups, we came up with questions to ask the community based off of the observations we made the day prior. We then applied our communication skills and young entrepreneurial minds to the community of old Havana. Here we indulged in cultural centered stories from locals and adapted a deeper understanding into life as a Cuban. Each group of students was accompanied by one of our chaperones and a translator for fluent communication. Some of the most valuable advice we received through our interviews came from an older woman who told us to work hard for what we want in life, and be happy doing so. We then reflected on our morning over another exquisite Cuban lunch accompanied with a view of la cabana fortress. After that, we spent our time in a senior home talking to the elders along with a school of 9 year olds working on a project with legos. We then played footbal with in a courtyard with a group of young boys who were running circles around us teens. We wrapped up the day with a divine dinner and more great conversations. —Gabbie
