If I had to describe today in one word it would be sunburnt. Our necks, and backs, and of course our sock tan lines were the markings of a successful day on Rottnest Island. Originally named for the Quokkas that live there, Rottnest island is filled with a rich history, from serving as penal colony to one of the most popular vacation destination for Australians. As beautiful as the scenery was, the history is much less wonderful. The people who built this special place were young and old aboriginal men convicted of minor crimes such as stealing bread and drunkenness. As hard as it was to hear the hardships these people had to endure, it was equally as important to learn it.

The day was filled with sun-soaked adventures including biking past salt lakes, up hills, and to a lighthouse. Although the ride was hard, as we were flying down the final hill a rush of pride swept the group. We did it.The cherry on top to this wonderful day was an hour swimming in the crystal blue water by the harbor. After it all, we packed our bags, and changed out of our salty bathing suits, tired and ready to take the ferry back.
